Choosing the Unconventional Path: My Journey as a Homeschool Mom

I’m Bryanna, a proud Brooksville Homeschool mom of two. If you had asked me years ago what my life would look like, I never would have pictured this—teaching my kids at home, building a homeschool program from scratch, and creating a community for other families like ours. My life today looks nothing like I imagined, and yet, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Because sometimes life has a way of rewriting your story.

Why I Chose to Build a Brooksville Homeschool

For me, it started when I became a mom. Like many parents, I had a vision for my kids. I pictured them in school, making friends, learning in classrooms filled with bright colors and smiling teachers. I envisioned school plays, science projects, field trips, and milestones like the first day of kindergarten and high school graduations.

But life doesn’t always go according to plan.

When my daughter was five years old, we learned she was autistic. That diagnosis changed everything. Overnight, the goals we had for her education—and even our expectations for what school should look like—shifted completely.

At first, we tried to adjust within the system. When the pandemic hit, like millions of families, we had no choice but to try online school. It was a disaster. The lack of individual attention, the rigid structure, the impersonal nature of learning through a screen—it just wasn’t working. We watched her lose confidence, become frustrated, and fall behind academically.

We toured schools. We asked questions. We looked for the right fit. But time after time, we left disappointed. And somewhere along the way, we realized: maybe what we were looking for didn’t exist. That’s when the idea of homeschooling entered the picture.

Overcoming the Fear of Homeschooling

The idea of homeschooling felt overwhelming at first. I didn’t grow up in a homeschooling family. I didn’t know anyone who had done it. The thought of being fully responsible for my children’s education was intimidating, to say the least. But the more we researched, the more homeschooling here in Brooksville made sense for us.

We wanted flexibility. We wanted to teach at a pace that worked for our kids. We wanted to focus on life skills, creativity, and the kind of learning that goes beyond test scores and worksheets. And most importantly, we wanted our daughter—and eventually, our son—to feel safe, supported, and understood.

How Ivory & Sage Started

Seven years later, here we are. Still homeschooling. Still learning as we go. And while the journey has been anything but easy, it’s also been one of the most rewarding decisions we’ve ever made.

From the beginning, people encouraged me to create my own program. My mentor told me, “You should start your own thing.” Friends and family echoed the same sentiment.

But every time, I would smile, nod, and push the idea to the back of my mind. It felt too big. Too scary. Too much responsibility. What if I failed? So instead, I stayed quiet. I kept jotting down ideas for lessons. I wrote goals in notebooks. I thought about what a dream a Brooksville Homeschool program might look like—but always in private.

Then one day, everything changed.

I had signed my kids up for a local class. It wasn’t cheap, but I told myself it would be worth it. When we arrived, though, it was a huge disappointment. The class didn’t deliver on any of its promises. The kids didn’t learn much. The environment wasn’t welcoming. I left frustrated and disheartened.

But that frustration lit a fire in me.

On the drive home, I thought, Why am I waiting? Why am I paying for programs that don’t meet our needs when I could create something better? And right then, I decided. No more waiting. No more second-guessing. I created a Brooksville Homeschool group. I shared my idea. And I jumped in with both feet.

That was eight months ago.

Building the Brooksville Homeschool Community

In less than a year, what started as a small idea has grown into something I’m so proud of. We’ve built a Brooksville Homeschool community where families feel welcomed and supported. We’ve partnered with local businesses for field trips and events. We’ve hosted classes, meetups, and activities that bring learning to life. Most importantly, we’ve created a space where kids—and parents—feel like they belong.

Because homeschooling can be lonely. It can feel isolating when you don’t have a support system. I wanted to change that. I wanted families to have a place to connect, make friends, and learn together. And slowly, piece by piece, that dream is becoming reality.

Lessons Learned Along the Way

The dream has always been bigger than just classes or lesson plans.

The dream is community.

I want to create a Brooksville Homeschool space where families come not just for academics but for connection. A place where kids can learn, yes—but also laugh, make friends, and build confidence.

I picture community events where parents chat over coffee while kids explore science experiments or art projects. I picture park days, field trips, holiday parties, and workshops. I picture families who feel supported, encouraged, and understood.

And little by little, we’re building that dream.
