The Creative Commons
Make Room. Show Up.
The Creative Commons is a project-based creative program where teens work independently on projects of their choosing in a relaxed, supportive environment. At the beginning of the semester, students will explore a variety of creative possibilities and receive guidance in selecting projects that match their interests, abilities, and goals. Projects may include creative writing, photography, art, design, digital media, building, or other creative pursuits, with students having the flexibility to work on one larger project or several smaller ones throughout the semester. Each weekly session provides dedicated time to work on projects, socialize with other teens, exchange ideas, and receive individual guidance and support when needed. Monthly creative challenges will also be offered to encourage students to experiment with new ideas and techniques or take a break from their ongoing projects. Basic classroom and art supplies will be provided, while students pursuing specialized projects may need to bring additional materials or equipment, including personal devices for digital work. Although students have considerable freedom in choosing their projects and working at their own pace, active participation and consistent effort are required, as this is a structured creative program rather than an unstructured social gathering. The semester will conclude with a Creative Commons Art Exhibition, where students will showcase their completed work to family and friends, whether that consists of one substantial creation or a collection of smaller projects. No previous artistic experience is required, and students of all creative interests and skill levels are welcome.
- Creative expression through a variety of artistic and digital mediums
- Independent project planning, development, and execution
- Creative problem-solving, experimentation, and critical thinking
- Personal interests, new skills, and imaginative ideas
- Collaboration, peer feedback, and sharing inspiration
- Time management, self-motivation, and creative independence
- Presenting and showcasing their work in a final art exhibition
What they take away: Skills Teens Will Develop
Throughout the semester, students will build skills that support independence and maturity, including:
- Creative Thinking: Turning original ideas into meaningful projects.
- Independence & Self-Motivation: Taking ownership of their work and creative decisions.
- Project Management: Planning, organizing, and completing projects at their own pace.
- Problem-Solving: Overcoming creative challenges and finding solutions.
- Time Management: Setting goals, prioritizing tasks, and managing their time.
- Communication & Collaboration: Sharing ideas, exchanging feedback, and connecting with peers.
- Adaptability & Perseverance: Experimenting, learning from mistakes, and refining their work.
- Confidence & Self-Expression: Developing their creative voice and proudly presenting their accomplishments.
